Pearls are not a crystalline compound like the majority of gems that people like to put in their jewelry; they are made from carbon, a compound more prone to damage. That’s why any owner of pearl jewelry should know how to properly care for them.
Black pearls are rarer than the majority of types of white pearl. There are cultured black pearls, then the rarer natural ‘Tahiti’ pearls, then the even rarer South Sea black pearl. Black pearl rings, cultured or not, need a level of care that many other rings can do without.
People say that pearls need to be worn, and that can be true, but contact with acids in the skin, lotions, soaps, even cologne can damage the surface of your black pearl. Even though the pearls in rings are not in contact with skin as much as a necklace or a bracelet is, it would be best to perform all your preparations like makeup, perfume, etc before you put on the ring.
Take special care when removing the ring from your finger as they are not set as securely as gems, which can be held in place by steel claws. Use a soft and moist cloth and lukewarm water to clean your black pearl rings after each time they are worn. You can get the appropriate types of cloth as well as some tips on cleaning from jewelers if you are unsure.
Store your rings in soft cloth bags and not just place them with the other pieces in your jewelry box. The hard surfaces of gems and metals can damage the black pearl. Black pearl ring should be kept in an environment with some moisture, as they are from the sea after all and water is their natural element. Putting your pearls in dry places can cause the surface to crack.
